Hi TrueTalks Community,

Cryptocurrency It’s shiny, it’s new, it’s confusing and that’s exactly what scammers are preying upon! Cryptocurrency fraud has become a big problem, with fraudsters coming up with new ways to trick people on a daily basis.

Different Types Of Crypto Scams

  • Fake Investment Platforms: Ever seen an ad promising big returns from trading crypto? These investment sites make it look easy, just deposit, sit back, and watch your money grow. Until your money and the website disappear. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Impersonation Scams: Getting a message from a celebrity saying they’ll double your crypto? No celebrity is sliding into your DMs for cash, and neither are any legit investors.
  • Phishing Links and Fake Wallets: Scammers often send messages pretending to be from your crypto wallet provider, asking you to log in “for security reasons.” These are usually fake sites waiting to steal your login info. Always use the wallet’s official site.
  • Ponzi Schemes & Pump-and-Dump Groups: You get invited to a “private” investment club where everyone buys a coin, pumping up its value before cashing out. Sounds exciting until the scheme crumbles, leaving you with worthless coins.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Before investing in crypto, look for reviews, check if the coin is listed on reliable exchanges, and read what trusted sources have to say.
  • Keep your wallet keys and passwords safe, and use two-factor authentication wherever possible. Consider using a hardware wallet for extra security.
  • If something feels off or if a deal is too good to be true, trust your gut, and take your time to think before acting.
  • Always use Truecaller to look up suspicious numbers or message senders, if the number is marked as spam and other users have left comments, go through them before investing. You can also report numbers to help others in the community.
  • Turn on advance spam blocking on Truecaller, to prevent these scammers from getting in touch with you.

Got Scammed? Here’s What You Can Do
