Hey, TrueTalkers!

Recently, there’s been a rise in a new type of scam where users receive a text message claiming an amount has been credited to their bank account. Following this message, they receive a phone call from the scammer stating that the money was transferred by mistake and asking them to return it via UPI. This is a fraudulent tactic to trick users into transferring their money.

Example of a Fake Transaction Message:

How the Scam Works:

  • Message from a Phone Number: The user receives a message from a regular phone number (not a bank) that states something like, “₹XXXX has been credited to your account.”

  • Follow-up Call: Shortly after, the user gets a call from someone claiming they accidentally transferred the amount and requesting that it be returned. The caller may ask for the money to be sent back through a UPI transaction.

  • False Claims: The scammer often uses urgency, saying that it’s important to act immediately to return the funds, or they may insist the user verify the message details they’ve received.

Protect Yourself from This Scam:

  • Transaction Messages Don’t Come from a Phone Number: Genuine transaction messages from banks are sent from official sources and not regular phone numbers. Always be suspicious if such a message comes from a random number.

  • Check Your Bank Statement: Before taking any action, verify the transaction by checking your bank statement or your banking app to confirm if any amount has actually been credited.

  • Never Act on Phone Instructions: Do not initiate any financial transfers based solely on a phone call. Always contact your bank directly through official channels if you’re unsure.

Stay Alert and Report Fraud:

Additionally, you can set Truecaller as your default messaging app. By doing so, messages from numbers with a high spam score will be automatically marked as spam and placed in your spam folder, helping you avoid falling victim to such scams.

By reporting suspicious numbers on Truecaller, you not only protect yourself but also help prevent others from becoming victims of these scams. Stay informed and vigilant!
