Hello South Africa,

Have you been getting automated calls, trying to sell you something, or asking you to “Press 1” for more info? This could be a scammer trying to steal your information. Keep reading to find out more.

How the Scam Unfolds

The "Press 1" scam in South Africa involves fraudsters using automated calls. Recipients hear a recorded message instructing them to press 1 for more information. Once they do, they are connected to a scammer pretending to be a telemarketer, a bank, or a government agency.

The scammer then tries to extract personal information, such as bank details or passwords, under the pretense of verifying identity or resolving an urgent issue. The goal is to commit identity theft or financial fraud by exploiting the person’s trust and sense of urgency.

Signs to Watch Out For

  • Automated calls that prompt you to “press 1” for more information.
  • Calls from unknown numbers that create a sense of urgency or panic, claiming immediate action.
  • Callers posing as bank, government, or company representatives seeking personal information like bank account numbers, passwords, or ID numbers.
  • Unrealistically good offers or deals.
  • Requests for online payments.
