Beware of These Common Scams on WhatsApp*: A Global Warning

Hello TrueTalks community,

In today's digital age, WhatsApp, with its billions of users worldwide, has become a fertile ground for scammers. These fraudsters are continually evolving their tactics to exploit unsuspecting users. Here, we outline some of the most common scams, on WhatsApp,  happening across the globe, and advice on how to stay safe.

1. The Verification Code Scam

One of the most prevalent scams involves fraudsters tricking victims into handing over their WhatsApp verification codes. The scammer, pretending to be a friend or family member, claims they accidentally sent their verification code to the victim's number and requests it back. Once the scammer receives this code, they gain control over the victim's WhatsApp account, potentially leading to identity theft or financial fraud.

Safety Tip: Never share your WhatsApp verification code with anyone. WhatsApp will never ask for your OTP codes or passwords.

2. The Gold version Scam

Victims receive a message enticing them to download a so-called "WhatsApp Gold" version, which supposedly offers enhanced features. Clicking on the provided link leads to malicious software being installed on the user’s device, compromising personal information.

Safety Tip: There is no WhatsApp Gold. Always download updates from official app stores only.

3. The Fake Job Offer Scam

Scammers send out lucrative job offers or interview invitations via WhatsApp. These messages often require the recipient to pay a fee for training, application processing, or equipment. Once the fee is paid, the job offer disappears, and the victim is left out of pocket.

Safety Tip: Verify the authenticity of any job offer that requires upfront payment directly through official company contact methods.

4. The Lottery or Prize Scam

This scam involves messages claiming that the recipient has won a lottery or prize, asking for personal details or a small fee to claim the winnings. Providing this information can lead to identity theft or financial loss.

Safety Tip: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Never pay money or give out personal information to claim a prize.

5. The Friend in Need Scam

Scammers hijack a WhatsApp account and pretend to be someone urgently needing money, targeting the victim’s friends and family. The urgency and seemingly legitimate request can lead to quick payments without verification.

Safety Tip: Always verify such requests through a different communication method before sending money.

6. The Free Gift Scam

Messages promising free gifts in exchange for completing a survey or sharing the message with friends are common. These usually lead to phishing websites designed to steal personal information.

Safety Tip: Be wary of offers that require you to input personal information to receive a free gift.

Staying Safe

To safeguard against these and other scams, always keep your WhatsApp and other apps updated, enable two-step verification, and maintain skepticism about too-good-to-be-true offers. Educate your friends and family about these scams to create a more secure digital environment for everyone.

Remember, awareness and caution are your best defenses against these increasingly sophisticated scams on WhatsApp. By staying informed and vigilant, you can enjoy the benefits of digital communication without falling prey to malicious actors.
