Hello TrueTalks Community,

In today's world, where almost everyone has a mobile phone, text message scams have become a common problem. These scams try to trick people into giving away personal information or money. However, there's good news: Truecaller's Smart SMS feature offers a strong defense against these scams. Let's explore how it works and some common scams to watch out for.

Understanding SMS Scams

Scammers use different stories to trick you. Here are some examples:

  • Charity Scams: They pretend to be someone wanting to donate a lot of money for a good cause and ask for your details.

  • Lottery and Prize Scams: Messages saying you've won a lot of money in a lottery or contest, asking for personal information.

  • Loan Scams: They say your loan is approved and ask you to visit a website or download an app.

  • Job Scams: Offering easy money for jobs that seem too good to be true.

  • Banking Scams: Fake alerts from banks asking for your personal information.

  • Payment and Refund Scams: Messages about money credited to your account or verifying details for a delivery.

  • Adult Content Scams: Links promising adult content or products.

  • Dating Scams: Offers for dating services, asking you to call a number.

    • I found this scam on Twitter which is talking about TRAI blocking your personal number.
#FraudAlert: Today morning I received a call from better sophisticated scammers. The entire call lasted about 1 hour and I was quite convinced that it was genuine.
The scammers initially called me through an automated voice call (+91 8112-178017) saying it’s from @TRAI. The robot said my number would get blocked in 2 hours and press 9 for more info.
That led me to the first guy who pretended to be from the Telecom Division. He told me someone in Bombay Andheri East has lodged a complaint against a number registered through my Aadhaar for illegal advertising and harassing texts. Apparently, the @MumbaiPolicehave sent them the blocking request and so TRAI would have to block all the numbers associated with the owner.
He gave me the details of the FIR etc and told me he’s forwarding the call to the Andheri East police station. He asked me to ask the police to send them a “clarification letter” that my original number is mine and I am not associated with the case to avoid the block. “There are a lot of identity theft going on in India” he said.
That led me to the second guy who told me he’s the police SI in Mumbai Police. He took some details and said my statement would have to be recorded since I can’t be physically present in Bombay.
Then I received a video call from a third guy (+91 90324 07612). He was in a police uniform and spoke good English (first hint of doubt, no Marathi accent)!
Called his Head Constable in English and passed an order “to investigate” my case. I played along.
The fourth guy, the HC, then was recording my “statement” and asked for my Aadhaar number which I cited wrongly. I wanted to see what they do with it. The guy was talking on the walkie-talkie (some good production). Apparently, I was involved in a “65-crore money laundering case”. This got too funny there and honestly, cringe. “Kya aap kuch chhupa rahe ho hum se?” he asked 😂.
I told him Dawood is my chacha. “Who Dawood?” he wondered. “Dawood Ibrahim. He’s my chacha (uncle)”. I told them to piss off and that was it.
But. The point is that the scammers are now a lot more sophisticated in their tactics. I don’t see a reason why my parents, older generation won’t fall for this. I bought the entire skit for 30 mins.

In today's digital landscape, where communication is increasingly virtual, establishing trust and authenticity is paramount. A Verified Badge serves as a symbol of trust, confirming the authenticity of a user and fostering a sense of confidence among its user base.
The Significance of the Verified Badge
The Verified Badge is a symbol of trustworthiness within the Truecaller community. When a user sets up a profile using their genuine name, the platform's intelligent algorithms spring into action. Truecaller carefully assesses the provided information, ensuring its alignment with stringent verification criteria. If the name meets these standards, the user is rewarded with the coveted Verified Badge.
      Enhancing the user experience
When a call is received or a number is searched, the presence of the Verified Badge immediately signals to other users that the displayed name is authentic. This transparency fosters a sense of trust and security, empowering individuals to confidently engage in communication, knowing that the identity on the other end is legitimate.

Steps to start your verification process on Truecaller
      1. Create your Truecaller profile using your actual name.
      2. Truecaller systems will determine if your name qualifies for the Verified badge.
      3. If you previously used a fake name or initials, update your profile with your real name to be considered for verification.
      4. Link your Google account with Truecaller.
      5. Connecting your Google account enhances our ability to verify your name accurately, increasing your chances of receiving the Verified Badge. Additionally, the badge is displayed on your profile based on suggested names. Ensure your profile information remains up-to-date for the best chance of verification!
Note: Verified Badge do not prevent from getting marked as spam.
