Hi TrueTalks Community,

Picture this your phone rings, and the person on the other end says they're a family member who’s in trouble. They might say they've been in a car accident or got into trouble and need money urgently. Sometimes, they even say they're your grandchild but the caller is a scammer. Once you send the money, it's gone forever.

What is the Grandparent scam?

The Grandparents Scam is a misleading scheme where fraudsters prey on the emotions of the elderly by posing as a grandchild or a trusted authority figure. These scammers often contact their targets via phone, email, or even social media, claiming to need financial help due to a supposed emergency. They might fabricate scenarios such as being involved in a car accident or facing legal trouble.

How Does it Work?

The scammers take advantage of the victim's emotions, using urgency and fear to pressure them into sending money quickly. They may request payment via wire transfer, prepaid debit cards, or gift cards, making it hard to trace and recover the funds. The victim, believing they are helping their grandchild or loved one, willingly sends the money, only to later realize they have been deceived.

Why Are Seniors Vulnerable?

Elderly individuals are often more vulnerable to scams due to their trusting nature, cognitive decline, or lack of familiarity with technology. Moreover, scammers exploit the emotional bond between grandparents and grandchildren, making the victim more prone to manipulation.

Protecting Against the Scam:

  • Educate yourself and your loved ones about common scams.
  • If contacted by someone claiming to be a grandchild or family member in need, verify their identity by asking personal questions only they would know or contacting other family members.
  • Scammers often pressure victims to act quickly. Take your time, verify the situation, and avoid making impulsive decisions.
  • If you suspect a scam, report it to local authorities, and share your experience with friends and family to raise awareness.

How Truecaller Steps in to Help

Our app promptly highlights calls from top spammers by flashing them in red, ensuring you're alerted. Additionally, you can review comments from other Truecaller users to assess the call's legitimacy and make an informed decision on whether to respond or dismiss the call.

Yeh, it's time to educate💡 our elders not to get in struck in the net laid by these scammers.

I always try my best to tell all seniors  to ignore such messages & never reply to such calls or sms.

Seriously insane scammers🤔

Thanks for the post🙏

    • Know Who’s Calling Even Before Your Phone Rings With Call Alerts!!
Identifying someone you know is about to call. Thanks to Truecaller’s Call Alerts feature, you won’t be the person everyone dreads at the cinema.

      How do Call Alerts Work?

With the Call Alert feature, you can set your phone to silent if you want to ignore a call or move to a quieter place if you need to answer it. This feature uses Data/Wi-Fi to securely send an alert from the caller's phone to yours as soon as the call is made. Available only on Android.

Steps to Enable Call Alerts On Android:
Head over to the Truecaller app Go to Call Settings Under notifications Toggle on Call alert notifications

      For IOS:
Enable push notifications for Truecaller on your iOS device settings to use Call Alert:
Go to Settings > Notifications > Truecaller > Toggle on the Sounds and Badges.

Note: Call alerts only work for calls from Android devices with Truecaller installed. Calls from iOS devices won't trigger a Call alert.

      Fun Facts About this Feature
Call alerts work only when a Truecaller user calls you. As Data/Wi-Fi is faster than a regular cellular network, the notification reaches you first, before an actual call comes through. Call alerts would require notification permission to work seamlessly on the app. Download Truecaller: https://tc.onelink.me/571208033/1fqyddvr
