Hi TrueTalks Peeps,

If you ever find yourself suddenly getting an email or message declaring you've won a huge amount of money, a fancy car, or some fantastic prize, it's natural to feel excited. But remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is! It's always smart to approach such messages with caution and skepticism.

What is a Lottery Scam?

A lottery scam is a type of fraud where individuals are tricked into believing they have won a large sum of money, a luxury vehicle, or some other valuable prize. These scams often involve convincing emails, messages, or phone calls and are usually accompanied by a request for personal information or payment to claim the supposed prize.

Identifying a Lottery Scam?

A lottery scam typically operates in several stages:

Initial Contact: The scammer reaches out to the victim via email, phone call, or a text message informing them that they have won a lottery or sweepstakes prize. They often use official-sounding names or logos to make their communication appear legitimate.

Claiming the Prize: The victim is told that to claim their prize, they need to provide personal information such as their name, address, phone number, and sometimes even banking details.

Request for Payment: The scammer informs the victim that they need to pay taxes, processing fees, or other expenses upfront before they can receive their prize. They may pressure the victim to act quickly, claiming that the offer is time-sensitive.

Payment: If the victim falls for the scam, they may wire money, send prepaid debit cards, or provide credit card information to the scammer.

Disappearance: Once the scammer receives the payment, they disappear, and the victim never receives the promised prize. By the time the victim realises they've been scammed, it's often too late to recover their money.

Better to be safe than sorry, be vigilant:-

  • Research the lottery or organisation claiming to have awarded the prize. Legitimate lotteries and sweepstakes typically do not require winners to pay fees upfront to claim prizes.
  • Never provide sensitive personal information such as your Social Security number, Bank account details, UPI PIN, UPI ID, Adhaar and PAN card details, or credit card information to unknown individuals or organisations.
  • Take your time to consider any offers or requests for payment carefully. Scammers often use high-pressure tactics to rush victims into making impulsive decisions.
  • If you need clarification on the legitimacy of a lottery win notification, consult trusted sources such as friends, family members, or consumer protection agencies before taking further action.
  • If you suspect a scam, report it immediately in your Truecaller app. Contact emergency services by dialling 112 or 1930 If you reside in India, or visit the nearest Cyber Crime Police Station or Local Law Enforcement Agency.

      How do Call Alerts Work?

With the Call Alert feature, you can set your phone to silent if you want to ignore a call or move to a quieter place if you need to answer it. Steps to Enable Call Alerts On Android:
Head over to the Truecaller app Go to Call Settings Under notifications Toggle on Call alert notifications

      Fun Facts About this Feature
Call alerts work only when a Truecaller user calls you. As Data/Wi-Fi is faster than a regular cellular network, the notification reaches you first, before an actual call comes through. Call alerts would require notification permission to work seamlessly on the app. Download Truecaller: https://tc.onelink.me/571208033/1fqyddvr
