OpenAI has launched a new workspace interface for ChatGPT called Canvas.. Announced on its official blog, Canvas is now available to ChatGPT Plus and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu users set to gain access next week.

Better collaboration with ChatGPT

GPT-4o is great for writing and coding, but the chat interface can be limiting for deeper revisions. Canvas addresses this by offering better project context and control.

With Canvas, you can highlight sections to show where you need help, and GPT-4o provides inline feedback like an experienced editor. You can directly edit text or code, use shortcuts to adjust length, debug, change reading level, add final polish for grammar and clarity, or insert emojis for emphasis.

Canvas activates automatically when useful, or you can prompt it with "use canvas."

Coding in canvas

Coding is a time consuming process and involves a lot of iterations. With canvas, ChatGPT can help you review code, add logs, add comments, fix bugs and even port your current code to another language. Current programming languages supported are PHP, Java Script, TypeScript, Python, Java and C++.

Training the model

OpenAI's GPT-4o is evolving into more than just an AI—it's becoming a creative collaborator. Designed to know when to open a dedicated workspace, make precise edits, or rewrite content entirely, GPT-4o aims to assist users seamlessly in their creative endeavors. The model's context-awareness and intuitive behavior are at the heart of this transformation.

One of the key advancements was teaching GPT-4o when to initiate a "canvas"—a dedicated space for writing or coding. The AI now knows to launch this canvas for prompts like, "Write a blog post about the history of coffee beans," while steering clear of unnecessary activations for routine questions. These improvements boosted accuracy by 83% in writing tasks and 94% in coding tasks.
